Harriet Ethel Briggs

Harriet Ethel Briggs, 88, of 8940 Upper St., Rushford passed away Sunday, August 2, 2015 at Comfort House of Allegany Co. Wellsville, following a brief illness. Born February 17, 1927 in Transit Bridge, NY, she was the daughter of Daniel S. P. and Harriet Histed Fields. On July 21, 1945 in the Rawson Baptist Church, she married Wallace W. Briggs who predeceased her on November 2, 1975.

Ethel, as she was known, had grown up in Transit Bridge, where she attended elementary school. Later she attended the Belfast School District and eventually moved to Rushford. In addition to raising her family, Ethel was a caregiver for various people in the area, and then from 1977 to 1987 she was a riveter for the Ontario Knife factory in Franklinville.

She enjoyed tatting dollies and other crafts, crocheting, cooking and gardening. Most of all she loved her family and spending time with them.

She had attended the Rushford Methodist Church, the Bellville Wesleyan Church and the Belfast Free Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Donald D. (Deanna) Briggs of Springville, and Clifford L. (Gail) Briggs of Machias; two daughters, Joan E. Briggs of Rushford, and Iona E. (Richard) Hinz of Delevan; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; two brothers, Paul (Aggie) Fields of Ogdensburg, NY, and Howard (Delores) Fields of Belfast; two sisters, Julia Washbon of Belfast, and Myrtle Simmons of Cuba; and several nieces and nephews.

Ethel was predeceased by a son, Douglas W. Briggs; a daughter, Audrey M. Briggs; and a brother, Harold Fields.

Friends may call at the Treusdell Funeral Home, Belfast on Wednesday, August 5 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday August 6, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the Belfast Free Methodist Church. Rev, Robert J. Mackmer, Pastor will officiate and burial will be in White Cemetery, Rushford. Memorials may be made to the Comfort House of Allegany Co. 141 East State St. Wellsville, NY 14895, the Belfast Free Methodist Church or the Rushford Rescue Squad.
