Born September 28, 1927 in Conneaut, Ohio, he was the son of Daniel L. and Ann Grant Murphy. On August 13, 1947 in Buffalo, he married the former Margarite M. Brockenshire, who predeceased him on March 5, 2014. The reception was held in the backyard of his parents' large home at 20 Penfield Street in Buffalo.

Frank had grown up in Buffalo and attended Lafayette High School. However, at the age of 16 adventure called and he joined the Merchant Marines for a year and then joined the U.S.Army in 1945. He served in the Pacific Theater, and, while aboard a troopship sent to bring the battle to the Japanese homeland, the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki; following that, he and his unit continued on to Japan where they patrolled the ravaged areas; later, they would become known as the "atomic" veterans. After the army Frank worked in various manufacturing jobs in Buffalo for a time, then moved to Alfred, NY in 1963, where he first worked at the N.Y.S. College of Ceramics and then became a postal carrier for the Town of Alfred, retiring in 1987. In the interim, he and Margarite had purchased a home in Friendship in 1969.

He enjoyed vegetable gardening, lawn games, reading political and historical journals and books. In Buffalo, and Alfred, he was a star bowler on several leagues. His favorite spectator sport was football, especially the Buffalo Bills. He loved to spend time with his family.

He was a member of the Belmont and Cuba VFW's, and participated in the color guard for memorial services.
