Bobby Frank Boyd
30 Year Navy Career Man
Bobby Frank Boyd, 86, of 3347 Co. Rd. 8, Friendship, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at the Veterans Hospital, in Bath following a lengthy illness. Born May 14, 1929, in Clay, Kentucky, he was the son of Clarence Bethel and Addie L. Hearon Boyd. On November 17, 1956 in the First Baptist Church of Richburg, he married Rowena May Fitzgerald, who survives.

Bobby had resided most of his life in the Friendship area. He grew up in Clay, Kentucky; Richburg and Friendship areas. After school he enlisted in the Navy, of which he made a thirty-year career, serving in WW2, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He sailed on many ships including the USS Randolf CV15, the USS Tidewater AD31, the USS Terror CMS, the USS Robinson DD562, the USS Iowa BB61, the USS Tallahatchie County LST 1154 and the USS George K. MacKensie DD836.

For 3 years he was gunnery instructor at Newport, Rhode Island. He was selected and rated as Master Chief Gunner's Mate in January 1967 and was selected in 1968 to write Fleet-rating exams at the Naval Examining Center at Great Lakes IL. He retired from active duty April 1, 1990.

He was employed as a guard for Macler Industries for a few years and for a period of time remodeled and painted houses in the area.

He was an avid reader, starting each day reading and studying his bible, loved history, enjoyed some traveling in later years to the USS Robinson's reunions and back to Kentucky to visit remaining family members. He loved his family and enjoyed his grandchildren. He showed kindness to animals, feeding birds and rabbits and watching wild life around his home.

He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the AARP.

Surviving are a son, William Ernest (Cynthia) Boyd of Germantown, MD; a daughter, Ruth Elizabeth (Bradley) Schiralli of Bolivar; four grandchildren, Bryan L Boyd of Germantown, MD, David A. Boyd of Germantown, MD, Carmen E. Schiralli of Bolivar, and Margaret L. Schiralli of Bolivar; a brother, Danny Scott (Isolde) Boyd of Saratoga Springs, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

Bobby was redeceased by a brother, Larry B. Boyd and a sister Wilma Gordon Boyd; and a half sister, Sandra L. Mehlenbacher.

Friends may call at the Treusdell Funeral Home, Belfast on Friday July 17, 2015 7-9 pm and 11 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday July 18, 2015. Following visitations funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm. The Rev. Robert J. Mackmer Pastor of Belfast Free Methodist Church will officiate and burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Friendship.
